Clay Ground Decides How A Post Is Set
The name is not decorative. Arcilla is Spanish for clay, and the community is named for it because clay has been dug and shipped out of this corner of the valley for well over a century. If you have put a shovel in the ground here you already know the feeling: heavy going when it is wet, hard as fired brick when it is dry.
That matters more to a fence than the material you pick. Clay holds water and changes volume with the season, so a post set shallow in it gets worked loose a little at a time until the run starts to lean. The fix is not a heavier panel. It is depth, a footing shaped so water drains away from the post rather than sitting against it, and spacing that does not ask any single post to carry more than it should.

About Arcilla
Arcilla is an unincorporated community in Riverside County, which means there is no city hall of its own; the county looks after it. It sits on the eastern side of the Temescal Valley at around 950 feet, roughly eight miles south east of Corona, with Riverside about twelve miles north and Perris a similar distance east.
It grew up around what was underfoot. Clay from this area was worked and shipped out along the old Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line that runs through the valley, and that trade is what gave the place both its industry and its name. The valley has always been a corridor as much as a destination, carrying the railroad and later the road traffic between Corona and Lake Elsinore.
What that leaves today is a quieter pocket of the county than the tracts a few miles north, on open ground with the Santa Ana Mountains standing to the west. Lots run larger than they do in town, and the fencing reflects that: longer runs, more boundary than privacy, and gates that have to let something bigger than a car through.

Where exactly is Arcilla?

Does the clay soil really change how a fence is built?
Yes, and it is the main thing we adjust for here. Clay takes on water and gives it up again, and that movement works a shallow post loose over a few seasons. Depth, a footing that drains, and sensible spacing are what stop it. None of that is visible once the fence is up, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
How deep will you set the posts?
Deeper than the minimum, and how much deeper comes from the ground and the height of the fence. We would rather dig the first hole and see what is down there than quote a number sight unseen.
Can you do long runs on an acre lot?
